HTC may license its brand to Indian smartphone makers in order to comeback in India.

Taiwanese smartphone brand HTC plans to return to the Indian market. Indian smartphone makers may get the license for the brand HTC.

The Taiwanese smartphone brand HTC exit India a year ago. Now it plans to comeback in India. According to a report by The Economic Times, HTC plans to comeback in India and in talks with the Indian smartphone manufacturers Micromax, Lavaand Karbonn to license its brand. The discussions with the three Indian brands are in advance stage, Lava and Karbonn may team up to bid for the HTC brand license.

HTC wants to license its brand for smartphones and mobile accessories as well as tablets. Usually, HTC target Rs. 1000+ segment (also the fastest growing segment in India) where brands like Micromax, Lava are failed to survive. This will help the Indian smartphone makers to re-enter this price segment.

In return, HTC will earn royalty. Earlier HTC failed to compete against the Chinese brands like Xaiomi and Oppo as well as against Samsung and exit India. Now returning to the Indian market, maybe switching to a new strategy by licensing its brand.

Also, Indian makers are not in good condition as they have a market share of less than 10%. Earlier in 2015, Indian smartphone makers had a market share of up to 40%. These brand are also failed against the Chinese brands.
